Nov. 2020 Troop 55B Outing – C&O Canal Bike | “Long Pond” Hike Camping Trip

When: November 21-22, 2020
Where: C&O Canal Bike Trail; Long Pond (Red) Hiking Trail
Time: Arrive at the St. Francis parking lot at 7:00 AM on Saturday, Nov. 21; Return to St. Francis by noon on Sunday, Nov. 22nd.

Campsite: Little Orleans Campsite (w/ pavilion and heated shower)

We can park the cars/trailers at the 15 mile creek campsite (the place we previously parked at) and if the Little Orleans campsite is open we can go park there.

Hikers: Hike on “Long Pond” red hiking trail, 12 miles out and back (6 miles one way) from Little Orleans to the valley between Green Ridge and Town Hill, turn back when you see the visitor center across the valley. Or you can turn back at long pond, which is 8 miles out and back (4 miles one way). The trailhead could be reached by Oldtown Orleans Road (39°37’53.2″N 78°24’57.6″W https://goo.gl/maps/F5endmUuotJNyfYc9) or by hiking 2 extra miles on the C&O Canal trail, which intersects with the Long Pond trail at lock 58.

Bikers: Bike on the C&O canal trail, start from Little Orleans and could go toward Hancock (17 miles to the east) and bike back to the campsite. If anyone wants to return home without camping, they could turn back early as a group. Scouts need to bring your own bicycle and hamlet for biking. 

Scouts will need to bring a bag lunch to eat on the trail. Wearing comfortable clothes and shoes on a ride. Scouts must also be prepared when they hike, bike or camp at night. As always, water bottles, sunscreen and rain gear is always a good idea. 

Scouts must arrive at St. Francis at 7:00 am. Saturday morning after having breakfast or have brought breakfast with them. They must bring a personal trail lunch for biking/hiking.  

Due to COVID-19 safety consideration, we require all scouts and adults wearing masks during car ride,  do not share food and drink, and do their best for social distance. By signing this registration, the participant(s) and the parents agree to the COVID19 risk and liability acknowledgement and agreement (Link here).

There is a $20 fee for each scout and parent attending (which includes a $10 transportation fee). The transportation fee is waived for both scout and parent if the parent is driving.
