Whether this is your first whitewater rafting trip or you’re an experienced rafter, the Lower Yough (pronounced “Yok”), in the heart of The Laurel Highlands, is a blast!! Troop 55 will camp at Benner’s Camp ground in Farmington, PA for this two night camping trip. On Saturday, you will be checking in with the professional rafting outfitters where you will receive your life jacket & helmet and meet a couple of your River Guides. From there you’ll be transported to the staging area where you’ll begin your river trip. Dividing into groups of 4 – 6 people, you’ll climb into your rafts for a quick introduction to river running before hitting the water. River safety, paddle strokes, boat maneuvering and what to expect on the water will all be covered. From there you’ll head to the river and the fun begins!
The Lower Yough – The Lower Yough is 7.5 miles of Class III – IV whitewater rapids. It is considered a drop & pool river: the rapids are separated by calm deep pools, allowing you to catch your breath and enjoy the scenery. (age 12 & up)
The Middle Yough – 10.5 mile trip through the beautiful Ohiopyle State Park passing trough class II rapids (under 12)
Scouts should bring a meal for the car on Friday evening and some cash for lunch on the return on Sunday. Saturday breakfast, dinner and Sunday breakfast are planned and prepared by patrols (lunch is provided by the rafting company). Please don’t forget to bring a dry change of clothes for after the rafting. Also, sun protection is essential. Scouts should wear Class B uniform.
