Troop 55 continues its camping ventures with a bike or hike camping trip at the Antietam National Battlefield’s Rohrbach Campground – a primitive campsite on the battlefield. On this trip, scouts will have two options: Option 1 is a 25 mile bike ride, down along the Potomac, and around the battlefield (earning some requirements for the biking merit badge); Option 2 is a 10 mile roundtrip hike to the battlefield visitor center, along with a Patrol Advisor, at their own pace. In both cases only light day packs with water and a packed lunch are needed. Pack accordingly (see BSA55.com website).
Scouts should eat breakfast at home before arriving at the church for departure. Scouts should have a packed daypack with Saturday’s lunch and plenty of water for hydration: For Saturday night scouts will prepare a patrol dinner together. For Sunday patrols will cook an early breakfast together. Each patrol has its own equipment for food preparation. For patrol meals, each scout needs a plastic bowl, plastic cup and plastic spoon. In addition to their camping gear, scouts should bring their own bike and helmet, if they wish to bike.
Each hiker should bring at least two 32 oz. Nalgene bottles for water. Scouts should remember the potential need for layered clothing when they pack. Synthetic clothing is preferred. Bring rain gear (no ponchos please). Pack for changeable weather, and be ready for a great adventure at the historic Antietam Battlefield.
There is a $36 fee for each scout and parent attending. THE $25 TRANSPORTATION FEE IS INCLUDED IN THE ABOVE FEES.
