The Cheat River Watershed is the largest free flowing watershed in the Eastern United States.  The Cheat River is one of the few rivers that flows Northward, with its beginnings in West Virginia’s highest mountains.  The river offers whitewater rapids for all ages and levels of experience.  The outfitters will provide a safety brief, all the equipment and trained guides.

The Lower Yough is Class III-IV and stretches 7.5 miles and contains over 30 rapids, all surrounded by the beauty of a spectacular wilderness canyon. Participants should be at least 13 years old with some paddling experience. The trip includes lunch on Saturday.

The Cheat Narrows winds 10 miles along scenic Rt. 72 just north of Albright Visitors Center. The Class 1-11 Narrows are full of massive boulders, crystal clear water and rapids. The Narrows are a great whitewater trip for beginners and advanced paddlers alike. The trip includes lunch on Saturday (sandwiches, chips, fruits, drinks).

Scouts will arrive late Friday night and set up camp at Benners Campground. They should eat prior to arriving or bring a bagged dinner for the car on Friday evening and some cash for lunch on the Sunday return. Saturday morning after breakfast, the scouts will check in at Wilderness Voyageurs at 9a.m. for their safety briefing for rafting down the Lower Yough. Those who raft down the  Cheat Narrows will drive to that launch site (approx. 20 minutes away – Route 26, 3381 N. Preston Highway, Albright WV) and will check in at 10 a.m. for their safety briefing. Wilderness Voyageurs will provide lunch for both rafting trips. Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast is planned and prepared by .patrols.

Please don’t forget to bring closed toe shoes, (keens or water shoes) a towel, sunscreen and dry change of clothes for after the rafting. Scouts should wear Class B uniform.
