April 2018 Outing – Antietam Bike or Hike – April 7-8

Arrive:  St. Francis parking lot 7:00 am on Saturday, April 7, 2018

Return: to St. Francis mid-afternoon on Sunday, April 8

The Civil War battle at Antietam is known as the bloodiest day in American history. Over 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing after twelve hours of fighting on September 17, 1862. The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia’s first invasion into the North and led Abraham Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.

Troop 55 will be visiting the Antietam Battlefield National Park on April 7-8. New scouts will be hiking through the national park, while older scouts have the option of biking or hiking. Please indicate below whether your scout plans to bike or hike (bring your own bike and helmet). We will be “car camping” overnight at the Rohrbach Scout Campground about four miles away.

Scouts should either eat breakfast at home or bring a meal for the car on Saturday morning. Scouts are responsible for their own lunch on Saturday. Foods such as dried fruit, granola bars, beef jerky, trail mix, and other lightweight snacks are recommended. Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast will be planned and prepared by patrols. Scouts should bring cash for lunch on the return trip Sunday.

Each hiker and biker should bring two 32 oz. Nalgene bottles for water. Bring rain gear (no ponchos please) and a warm sleeping bag. Pack for changeable weather and be ready for a great hiking or biking adventure.

There is a $35 fee ($20 transportation included) for each scout and parent attending. THE TRANSPORTATION FEE IS WAIVED FOR BOTH SCOUT AND PARENT IF THE PARENT IS DRIVING.
