2024 March Outing – Horseback riding/Fishing

Time:
Arrive at St. Francis church at 7:00 am on Saturday, March 16
Return to Great Falls Library around 9:30am on Sunday, March 17

Scouts will enjoy horseback riding at Jordan Hollow Stables in Stanley, VA, and camping and fishing at  Graves Mountain Farm & Lodges.

Scouts should pack a bag lunch for Saturday. We will bring our trailer with all troop and patrol equipment, and as always, Saturday dinner and Sunday breakfast are planned and prepared by patrols (Due to fire ban at the farm, please prepare for cold cut meals). Patrols will be responsible for dinner on Saturday, and Sunday breakfast. Scouts should bring money of $20-40 for buying snacks and foods at farm stores. 

Scouts must  bring tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, water bottle and headlight, please bring your scout book. B e prepared for cold weather at night time and warm weather during day time. Scouts should remember the potential need for layered, synthetic clothing when they pack. Rain gear and a warm sleeping bag are a must, as well as a change into warm dry clothes (no cotton) for sleeping, extra layers (no cotton) to add on, and extra pairs of dry socks. It will be cold in the evening.

Horseback Riding: 

The proper clothing and gear are important for your health and your comfort on a horseback ride. Here’s what to wear and carry along:

  • Proper clothing, such as long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and properly fitted boots (hiking boots are fine).
  • Rain gear, water bottle or canteen (stay hydrated), and sunscreen.

Jordan Hollow Stables is a horseback riding stable in Stanley VA – Luray VA offering scenic guided VA trail rides in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. Their experienced staff takes pride in their craft and strive to provide our guests a wonderful riding experience. See the wonders of our shaded trails as you stroll past the rolling waters of the Hawksbill Creek. Ride through beautiful country trails surrounded by the view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Jordan Hollow Stables is located near Luray Caverns, Skyline Drive and Shenandoah National Park.

Trail Rides:

  • At Jordan Hollow they offer a unique trail riding experience with our 1.5 hour guided trail rides in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley.
  • You can opt for either a walk pace or walk/trot pace trail ride.
  • Their trail rides cater to all riders’ age 7 years old and up; both first time riders and experienced riders!

There is a $95 fee for each scout and parent attending (including transportation fee). THE  $25 TRANSPORTATION FEE IS WAIVED FOR BOTH SCOUT AND PARENT IF THE PARENT IS DRIVING.

What Is it Like at Graves
The Blue Ridge starts to rise just to the northwest – the shoulder
Our farm lands abut the Shenandoah National Park in one place. To one side of you is our lower mountain – Graves at just 890 ft- there is a good ridge trail up to it. To the other side is Doubletop Mountain at 3455 ft – a hard scrabble on loose rock footing – technical.

You are on a working farm, with many activities – 12 plus – see the tabs on the listing, farm animal tours, live music, local beers, wines, and moonshine, a southern family style restaurant, nature walks, hawk walks discoveries, a seasonal pool with lifeguards ($5 pp), two swimming holes, two stocked fishing ponds, two mountain trout streams, massage, Yoga, and mountain climbing – all by appointment.

Where on the Farm
In the Rose River Valley – braced by two streams.
Just down the road – 200 yards – form the Market-Deli & Tackle corner store.

The Main Lodge Overlooking our stream valley, the farm, and the Blue Ridge with “Old Rag” mountain folding above Graves Mountain.

The Graves Mountain Trout Pond (Closed for Private Use with Our Guide)
Stocked Trout Pond Fishing, adjacent to the Shenandoah National Park is stocked and ready to go at Graves Mountain Farm & Lodges, Syria VA.

Open weekends only, Saturday 10 AM to 4 PM, Sunday 10 AM to 4 PM

How to find it:
– turn right at the Syria Crossroad Market – Graves Mtn Market-Deli & Tackle – onto RT 643 the Etlan/Weakley Hollow Rd, 200 yards up on left, you will see farm gate access to the pond area.

No license is required, although license and Trout Stamp is required for fishing our two mountain stream – the Rose and Robinson rivers.

The price per pound this year is $8.

Need fishing gear?
– the Graves Mtn Market-Deli & Tackle will have it.

There are plenty of fish for the catching as we stocked in early October.

We have Goldens, Rainbows, and Brookies.

Nonresidents
Nonresident 1-Day Freshwater Fishing $8.00
Nonresident 5-Day Freshwater Fishing – 5 consecutive days $21.00

Trout License – additionally needed for Nonresidents fishing in our streams.
From Oct 1 thru Jun 15, a nonresident trout license is required in addition to other nonresident licenses only if you are fishing in designated stocked trout waters. Our streams are stocked waters so this is required. $23.00

Residents
16 Years and Under
Free- Residents under 16 years of age nor is a Trout License required – all free.

17 Years and Up
Resident State Freshwater Fishing License* (age 16 and older)
1-year license: $23.00
