2022 Outing – Billy Goat Hiking or C&O Canal Towpath Biking

Hiking/Biking:  Billy Goat Trail or C & O Canal – Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park, 11710 Macarthur Blvd, Potomac, MD 20854
What:   Scouting for Food,  Hiking at Billy Goat Trail section A or Biking at C & O Canal Towpath
Time: Arrive at the St. Francis parking lot at 8:00 AM on Saturday morning, November 12th
Finished at Great Falls Library around noon on Sunday  November 13th

This outing scouts need to cover many activities: scouting for food, hiking or biking , camping and cooking. So please pay attention to the schedule.

November 12th, 2022  tentative schedule

8:00AM NOV 12th , scouts meet at St. Francis Church parking lot

8:30AM NOV 12th, scouts head to Seneca Shopping center at the intersection of Georgetown Pike, address reference : 1025 Seneca Rd, Great Falls, VA 22066

9:00AM – 10:00AM:  scouts and adult drivers collect donated food from assigned streets from Great Falls community, Dr. Shan will provide the detailed map

10:00AM – 11:00AM: scouts load the food item to a “Shared Inc” truck parked at Forestville ES parking lot, address: 1085 Utterback Store Rd, Great Falls, VA 22066 , google map link: https://goo.gl/maps/o6V2PekTnHCrPuTE7

11:00AM – 12:00PM: scouts unload the food item at Shared Inc at McLean Baptist Church, 1367 Chain Bridge Road, McLean, VA

12:00pm – 1:30PM: scouts arrive at the Robert C McDonell Campground( 7701 Tuckerman Ln, Rockville, MD 20854) and set up troop trailer, tents and patrol cooking area

1:30pm – 2:00PM: scouts arrive at Maryland Great Falls National Park (MD) , 11710 Macarthur Blvd, Potomac, MD 20854

2:00Pm – 4:00PM: scouts hiking  at the Billy Goat Trail, or biking at the C & O Canal Towpath

4:30pm – 5:00pm: return to the Robert C McDonell Campground( 7701 Tuckerman Ln, Rockville, MD 20854)

5:00pm -11:59pm, cooking dinner  and camping at the Robert C McDonell Campground

November 13th, 2022 tentative  schedule

7:00am -12: 00pm, cooking breakfast, Sunday worship service and camping at the Robert C McDonell Campground, return to Great Falls Library around noon

2PM Nov 12th Biking Option: Troop 55 will not provide bike for the scouts. Scouts need to bring your own bicycle and hamlet for biking. Scouts will need to bring a bag lunch to eat on the trail. Bring water for the bike ride and wear comfortable clothes and shoes on a ride. Scouts must also be prepared cold day when they bike. As always, water bottles, sunscreen and rain gear is always a good idea.  Parents : please transport the bike for your own scout(s) at the  Maryland Great Falls National Park parking lot (MD) around 1:30pm on November 12th (11710 Macarthur Blvd, Potomac, MD 20854), and prepare to pick up the bike at the same parking lot around 4pm. Troop currently did not have a trailer to transport the bikes for scouts.

2PM Nov 12th Hiking Option: Troop 55 scouts will enjoy a daypack hike on the Billy Goat Trail section A scrambling over steep cliffs, climbing on angled rocks and boulders and enjoying beautiful views of the Potomac River.  The return of the circuit hike is along the C&O Canal Towpath.

Each Scout needs to bring a daypack, two Nalgene water bottles, a bagged lunch for Saturday and a snack for the trail hike. As always, they need to be prepared for wet, cold, and windy weather on the trail and in camp. Raingear, non-cotton clothing layers, extra socks, hats, gloves, and hiking boots are highly recommended. Scouts will plan and prepare Saturday’s dinner, Sunday’s breakfast at camp site as a patrol. During these potentially cold trips, always err on the side of caution and PACK EXTRA CLOTHES & WARM SLEEPING GEAR.

No registration after Saturday November 12th 2022

There is a $45 fee for each scout and parent attending (which includes a $20 transportation fee). THE TRANSPORTATION FEE IS WAIVED FOR BOTH SCOUT AND PARENT IF THE PARENT IS DRIVING.

Non-driving scout fee = $45
Parent Driving, parent and scout fee = $25 each
