Spy Rock – April 2017
by Cam Beem – Vikings Patrol
This April, the Viking patrol (notice there is no plural, it was just me from the Vikings) had a great time backpacking on the Appalachian trail, seeing the great views of Crabtree Falls and Spy Rock. The car ride was very long, and I had nothing to do for three hours but it was fine. When I got there, we did quite a bit of waiting because the Feng-Mobile (Mr.Feng’s Car) took forever, so instead of having lunch at the top, we had lunch at the bottom of the mountain before we began our hike.
After an hour and a half or so of nonstop switchbacks, which are never easy, we came to the top of Crabtree Falls, which looked something like this…
The view was great, and we ate some snacks because we had already feasted on our lunches meant for this spot.
So we went on, and hiked for about three or four hours, which were hard to count I’m just guessing, and we came to a stop at the same clearing we camped in last year, and something amazing happened! Last year, a piece of equipment for one of our backpacking stoves went missing, and we found it here, and in perfect working shape! It was quite the finding!
After a nice dinner, we went to bed. A few people texted their parents because we had cell service in that particular spot in the mountain.
The next day, we had a more relaxing hike and went to Spy Rock, which is the coolest sight ever. We even had our service up there! Then we hiked back to the pick-up zone and I had to leave in a hurry.
