Hershey Park Trip Report by James L. (Bear Patrol)
We left Friday evening to head up to the Campground and arrived late that night. We heard there was cold weather and maybe snow or rain coming.
We setup some of our tents and then decided to move camp up a hill to a flat area next to a covered section where we setup our patrol Boxes for cooking.
It was cold that night and during the night, we could hear snow landing on the tents, piling up and then sliding off. When we looked out in the morning, everything was white. Snow in April? Wow.
We got up and put on warm clothes and made breakfast and practiced scout skills.
We didn’t know if the park would be open and weren’t sure what we would do. Water was frozen and some of th e stoves were frozen but we ended up getting them going and cooked a nice breakfast.
The Adult leaders brought some sleds and many scouts spent several hours sledding down the hillside toward the creek. It was a lot of fun.
We then caught a shuttle bus to the park mid-day while the snow had stopped but it was still cloudy and cold.
We got to the park and there weren’t many people there. We visited as many places as we could and all the roller coasters were closed. But, we finally found an indoor roller coaster called Laff-Track that was open. Some of us rode it many times. There was a zoo with animals and birds from North America that was included with our park tickets. There were wolves and a very big bear along with bobcats, snakes, turtles, eagles and mountain lions. We stayed in the park until closing and near the end, many of us rode the bumper cars.
We had a fire ring but there was a little trouble getting it started because of the snow/rain but once it was going, it stayed lit throughout our skits. We went to sleep around midnight.
On Sunday morning we cooked another hot meal and the weather was nicer although it was very cold during the night and froze the water again but warmed up by the time we left. Some of us stopped at Bass Pro Shops/Outdoor World on the way back and saw a lot of great outdoor gear including boats and a big aquarium with bas and gar fish.
Even with the weather, it turned out to be a great trip as we were mostly well prepared and ended up finding fun things to do.
