The Yough whitewater rafting trip is a Troop 55 favorite. In 2011 the water was extremely high and the rafts flew down the river in no time. This year (2012) the river was at a normal level and it was a longer trip with more exposed rocks and focused rapids. With the georgeous, sunny, warm weather many of the scouts “accidentally” fell in the water during some of the more calm stretches and enjoyed a cool swim. One raft that may or may not have contained the Scoutmaster was admonished to “focus more on rafting” and not so much on splashing and tom-foolery by rafting staff.
T. Mohler from the Bears Patrol had this to say:
The outing was great this weekend. The 12yrs. and up boys went on the lower Yough which was class III and IV rapids….and I can attest to the fast rapids, as I was thrown from the raft! The under 12yr. olds went down the middle Yough which were class I and II rapids. Fun was had by all. We arrived around 10pm on Friday night and set up camp. Next day woke up at 6am, made breakfast and went out for a day of rafting. We got back around 5:30pm and made dinner. We had the campfire at 8:45 to 10pm where each patrol performed a skit. Vinnie Marcantonio played the banjo for us all, as well. Lights out was at 11pm. Wake up was at 6:30am on Sunday. We ate breakfast, had service and left for home.
