On October 20-21, Troop 55 will host a JOTA station for JOTA-JOTI 2017 to include radio “fox hunting” and a Radio merit badge class.  This will also be an Open House – with hours when those interested in finding out about Troop 55 are welcomed to attend and participate.

Scouts should arrive after dinner on Friday at 7:00PM for setup for JOTA and JOTI followed by flashlight code competition and overnight camping (eat dinner prior to arriving at St. Francis.)  On Saturday, breakfast and lunch will be prepared by patrols and the event will end by 4:00 PM.

Program highlights

Events on Saturday include a flag ceremony, an audio code competition, a flag code competition, a foxhunt radio signal competition and Scouts on the Air/Internet.

Jamboree-On-The-Air (JOTA) uses amateur radio to link scouts and ham radio operators throughout the world.  Once at the ham radio station, communication typically involves talking on a microphone and listening on the station speakers.  However, many forms of specialized communication can also take place, such as video communication, digital communication (much like sending a message on your smartphone but transmitted by radio) or communication through a satellite relay or earth-based relay station (called a repeater).  Exchanges include such information as name, location (called QTH in ham speak), scout rank, age and hobbies.  The stations you’ll communicate with can be across town, across the country or even around the world.

Jamboree-On-The-Internet (JOTI) is where scouts from around the world gather online to learn about other cultures and the activities in which other scouts participate.  They communicate with each other using internet-enabled devices such as computers, laptops, tablets and mobile phones.

Scouts are welcome to come at any time on Friday or Saturday but please register in advance if you plan on attending.

There is a $10 fee for each scout and parent attending.  To register online and pay via PayPal, use the form below.  If you’d prefer to register/pay in person, print the permission slip and bring it and your $10 payment to Wednesday’s troop meeting.

Registration and payment must be received by Wednesday, October 18, 2017.
